el coyote bid me farewell today

today was my last day at the internship that i have had since aug. 2023. going into this job at the oba, i knew that i would learn the ins and outs of writing and apply the skills i’ve learned in class. instead, it also changed my life.

the first day of my first internship, at 19 years old, i was so nervous. i had my outfit mentally picked out for weeks–a white top with ruffle sleeves, black slacks, black flats and black/pearl hoops to tie it all together. i walked in and was greeted by a picture on my desk, featuring all my favorite things (sza, fleetwood mac, that 70s show, books and lake tenkiller). my boss gave me a tour of the building and showed me how to use the website. for lunch, my boss, a coworker, and i went to el coyote in okC. it felt like the quickest yet longest day ever because of my nerves!

throughout the fall semester, i dove head first into my role as a communications intern, and it was fun. my first published article was available in the september newspaper. i wrote feature stories over bankers monthly. i got to hear people’s backgrounds and what made them who they are.

by december, i was asked to continue through the spring. it was the biggest compliment, and i immediately agreed. everyone i worked with was so kind and welcoming. the spring semester was when i felt my writing develop the most. i got to attend events and have experiences that i never would have had access to beforehand.

today, my last day at my first internship, i was greeted with two slices of pie, OU magnets for my apartment next year and a lunch at el coyote. it was the sweetest but saddest goodbye. this opportunity was truly a gift, and i strongly believe it was a key point in preparing me for my future.

i’m so excited to see what the future holds. el coyote saw me at my first and last day at the oba. it bid me farewell, but i will be back to visit.

i’m talking about visiting the oba, of course. well, maybe el coyote too (the enchiladas are irresistable).

keep living the dream,

kayden
